Hello, beautiful.

I’m Sara Avant Stover, and I’m a recovering over-achiever.

I learned the hard way that all the productivity tips and perfectionism that seemed to serve me so well in the first phase of my life (elite schooling, straight A’s, eating disorders, countless hours in the ballet studio, and being a “good girl”) couldn’t carry me into the rest of my life. In fact, as my quest for wisdom, healing, and truth deepened, I found myself at war… with myself.

Turns out, the very drive that had defined me for years had also muffled the voice of inner wisdom I most needed to guide me. This voice is what I have come to refer to as my SHE. And every woman has access to Her.

After a cancer scare in my early twenties (coinciding with a serendipitous job opportunity in Thailand), I turned down a position with the Peace Corps in West Africa and, instead, hopped on a plane to Bangkok. A one-year teaching contract stretched into a 9-year love affair with Thailand (turns out: my soul’s home); and I spent my twenties on a healing and spiritual odyssey throughout Asia.

There, I meditated for weeks-on-end in Buddhist monasteries, trekked through the Himalayas, studied acupuncture and nutrition from local legends, scuba dived in the Andaman Sea, went white water rafting down the Ganges, studied at a Tibetan nunnery, and trained with some of the world’s leading yoga and meditation teachers. In the process, I healed myself of irregular menstruation, an ovarian cyst, low self-esteem, and wicked unhappiness. For the first time in my life, I felt happy, healthy, and whole. And, best of all, I, at long last, felt like a woman.

When I started to meet more and more women who had suffered in similar ways as me, I began to teach them all that I had learned. And, from this, The Way of the Happy Woman was born.

Just after I turned 30, I returned to the U.S. with far more than a love of coconut-everything and blood-red sunsets.

I returned convinced that each woman has, within her, the wisdom that will save her.

I learned the hard way that masculine, drill sergeant-style spiritual practices simply don’t work for women. In fact, they feed the voices of self-criticism and self-doubt that are most toxic to our growth.

I learned the hard way that women awaken differently from men. Our spiritual journeys happen within our bodies. (Our bodies are a blessing, not a curse).

I learned the hard way that we cannot transcend our fears, moods, and wounding, but we must learn to dance with our dark sides and embrace our shadows if we want to shine brightly.

I learned the hard way that the more we want to achieve, the more we need to slow down, soften, and make exquisite self-love non-negotiable.

I learned the hard way that trying to override our natural rhythms and cycles (hello, hardcore power yoga classes during our moon cycle!) is not only painful, it overlooks the great gifts we as women have.

But you already know this. At least something deep within you does.

And this is the part of you I’ve devoted my life to guiding women back to: the profound wisdom within every woman. She who knows. What I call one’s SHE.

If you’re here, you’ve heard the voice of your SHE.

In quiet moments. In rageful roars.

Following Her voice takes courage and surrender. And yes: there are best practices for navigating these skillfully, to learn and weave into your life.

That’s why you’ll find constant reminders here: to create your own daily rituals, to tune into your rhythms and cycles, to bravely soften, to ask the catalytic questions, and to keep taking step after step, subtle and true, towards your true home.

Your Heroine’s Journey is uniquely yours. But that doesn’t mean you need to walk it alone.

We women are wired for connection. We wake up together.

I’m not a guru — but I am a mentor.

I offer you the intimate details of my own path — the good, bad, and ugliest of moments — to inspire and invoke your own truth, enacted in subtle shifts and grand leaps, every day.

Our only hope for healing ourselves, and the world, comes through uncovering genuine happiness within.

The Heroine’s Journey runs against the modern grain of valuing achievement over presence, glorifying doing over raw and true essence … not to mention incessantly checking Facebook in lieu of giving yourself real self-care.

Tens of thousands of women worldwide have been inspired by the stories and insights in my best-selling books, The Way of the Happy Woman and The Book of SHE.

Dip your toes into my world by perusing my online journal, where you’ll find stories and reflections from my own Heroine’s Journey (triumphs, tears, and unapologetic beauty included).

If you think you’re too busy to fully express the longings of your heart … you’re in the right place.

If you think you’re too flawed to embody the perfection of your being … you’re already dancing the messy, mysterious path of feminine spirituality.

And if you wish someone would just tell you how to do it all, already (but you know you’d secretly want to smack them, if they did) … welcome to our sisterhood.

Welcome to my virtual home. May every moment you spend here bring you a little more home to yourself.

With love and respect,
