Dear Baby Boy

On Saturday, Peter and I were ready to conclude our vacation/family visits when we flew from Albany, NY to Denver, via Chicago. When we landed in Chicago, however, we learned that our connecting flight was not only an hour delayed but also overbooked. So (since I have two sisters, a brother-in-law, and a nephew there) we volunteered to give up our seats in exchange for several perks, and, an hour later, we stepped out of a cab in front of my sister, Shaw’s, house.

This was such a treat, as I had hardly seen my 17-month-old nephew at all since Christmas. On top of that, Shaw is about to have #2 any day now.

As being an aunt (or I find most of the world says “auntie,” which I actually like better) is one of my all-time favorite things, I’m sending a little note to my new nephew to let him know how much I love him and am looking forward to having him in this world.

Dear Baby Boy,

I loved meeting you through your mama’s belly on Saturday night. I’m not sure if it was your foot, your elbow, or your little derrière (or all of the above) that poked and stretched through her skin. But I felt you. And I felt how big and strong you have become, how playful and friendly you are, and how you are nearly ready for your journey into the light of this world.

If for any reason you’re scared or unsure, I wanted to let you know that the effort will be worth it. Once you get here you can sleep all you want! We are just excited to snuggle with you, kiss you, and make you giggle. Your big brother Beckett has lots of toys, books, and a nice room that he’s ready to share with you, too.

The other night when I was at Lake George I looked up at the sky. Above me were thousands and thousands of bright, white stars. You told me that you were one of those stars and that you were getting ready to come down. Then, when I saw Beckett yesterday, we sang “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” I guess we were singing to you. Did you hear us?

I love you and can’t wait to meet you soon,

Aunt Sara

    oh, this is so sweet!
There’s just something about babies. they are brand new, but there’s something that seems wise about them too. They were *just* in a whole other dimension – one that none of us remembers. What do they know? It’s so mysterious.
