An Exciting Take on Uncertainty

At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Michael Phelps, the 23-time gold medalist swimmer, set his sights on winning his 10th gold medal. Claiming that would make him the most decorated gold medalist in Olympic history.

Yet, as Michael dove into the pool for the 200-meter butterfly race, disaster struck. His goggles starting filling with water. As the race progressed, it only got worse. By the time he reached 150 meters, Michael couldn’t see a thing.

Those watching him had no idea there was a problem, for his strokes looked as precise and smooth as ever.

Then, when his final stroke propelled him to the finish line, Michael grabbed the wall, rose above the surface, tore off his goggles, and looked up at the clock.

He saw: he had not only won his 10th gold medal, but he had also broken the world record.

After the race, Michael told reporters what had happened. When asked what was going through his mind amidst such a challenge, he shared, “I was just hoping I was winning.”

How is it that, in the highest echelon of athletic competition, when facing an obstacle that would ruin the chances of most, Michael Phelps not only overcame the obstacle, but also soared above it?

How did he do that?!

Michael has a habit that he performs before every race. Right before it begins, he closes his eyes and visualizes himself performing the perfect strokes, from start to finish. He sees very clearly in his mind exactly how many strokes it takes to get from one wall to the next. He not only does this on race day, but he also rehearses the mind movie of this “perfect race” countless times prior to that.

When forced to swim the race he had trained for his entire life with the unexpected problem of water-filled goggles, Michael couldn’t see externally, but he could rely on his inner vision.

You may not aspire to win a gold medal, but you, too, have this capacity. When uncertainty strikes in your life, rather than spiralling down into worry and anxiety and then fabricating the worst-possible outcome in your mind, you can do what Michael did. In fact, it’s what most anyone who has achieved greatness has done throughout time.

Rather than being a victim of circumstances, you can train to become the deliberate creator of your own life.

Today, in the final episode of the podcast mini-series, Disrupting the Divine Feminine, I’m sharing how to do just that.

Whether it’s a health problem, relationship stress, the fear that the goodness you’re experiencing will fade, or simply a question mark about your next steps, we all live with varying degrees of uncertainty. It’s inescapable. Even though we like to think that our surroundings are fixed and stable, the truth is, we don’t know if we’ll be here this time next year, much less tomorrow.

Rather than spiralling down into anxiety and worry over life’s unknowns, how can you instead use uncertainty and unexpected obstacles as opportunities to be the deliberate creator of your dreams?

In today’s SHE Talk we’re exploring:

  • How outdated principles of Newtonian physics are keeping us boxed inside exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, thinking/playing small, and cycles of repeating our past
  • Why quantum physics can help us feel more alive, free, and in touch with the truth of limitless possibility that always surrounds us
  • Ways to adapt your spiritual practice each day to move from victim to victor, sufferer to creator
  • How to turn your fear of uncertainty into empowered anticipation and bold action

I’m saving the best episode for last, because this is the missing ingredient in our world…and your life!
