Funding Your “Spiritual Piggy Bank”

“It’s like adding a little bit everyday to your piggy bank,” my Ayurvedic MD advised me several years ago. 

It was a cold, windy winter in Colorado, I was working a lot, and I was feeling run down. 

“Rather than using up every last bit of energy each day,” she continued, “stop before you feel totally exhausted. Save some of your energy. After some time, that energy adds up.” 

In the years since then, I’ve followed this doctor’s simple–but not necessarily easy–advice. After experiencing the results of more energy and better health, I’d far rather dial back from efforts a bit each day than go full throttle (and crash and burn). 

The latter requires far more time, energy, and money to dig myself out of in the long run. Plus, it feels horrible to be totally depleted. 

The same goes for safeguarding our inner, spiritual strength. Just like getting good sleep, exercising, and eating well over the long-term helps us feel stronger physically, meditation, prayer, and contemplation also  help us feel strongpsychologically and spiritually. 

All that’s erupting in the world right now isn’t going away anytime soon. We need to be realistic and prepare for this to be a life-long journey of gradual, global change. Through our combined efforts it is still possible to create a more sane and harmonious world for the generations to come after us. 

In the meantime, how will we sustain ourselves for a lifetime of great change? Little by little, day by day. Like adding money to a piggy bank. 

At the start of each day, before we turn to our phones or the news, we can turn into ourselves and the quiet voice of truth that’s always speaking to us from within our hearts. 

In that communion we will find true nourishment. In that connection we will find true joy. In that homecoming we will find all the strength we need to show up and serve, day after day.
