Taking the High Road

This is something that my mom always
used to say to me when I was faced with
a sticky situation:

“Take the high road, Sara, that’s the only
thing worth doing.”

In retrospect, I realize just how potent (and
challenging) this advice really is.

Taking the high road requires stepping outside
of grudges, what other people want from you,
and your own egoic motives that are sometimes
so tempting to give into.

The other day I was reading something that
Oprah Winfrey wrote. (Side note: I love Oprah!)

She said that, back in the day, when she had
an afternoon talk show that focused on all of
those not-so-nice-things that afternoon talk
shows generally focus on (confrontation), her
life revolved around staying ahead of competitors.
She was in the rat race–full on.

Then, one day in the woods of Colorado while on vacation,
she connected with that still, small voice inside of her.
The voice of her intuition.

And she listened.

Guess what this voice said?

That’s right, it said, “Take the high road.”

And she did. Now, Oprah is one of the most
powerful and inspiring women in the world.

She stepped outside of the competition and created
her own paradigm focused on getting people
to think differently about themselves and pursue
ideas about spirit and balance and the possibility of
a better life.

My dear, what are the ways that you listen to this
quiet, wise voice within?

When have you taken the high road? How did it turn out?

When have you NOT and WISHED that you did?

Here’s to the high road!

Hi Sara, boy did this come at an appropriate time. Both Steve and I are struggling with a huge decision on buying a property in Avon, Ct. We had always thought we would settle where it is warmer most of the year and we walked into this house and it felt like home. Many considerations both emotional and practical. How do we step outside our comfortable ego and create a home that sustains not only us but supports me to go beyond my perceived limitations to create a safe-loving environment for others to realize there own perceived limitations and move past them into truth and clarity. Love P

Sara as usual in life-so timely. I am in a situation that can only be described as karmic payback,it was so awful. And even though Ive physically moved on-the folks are tugging at me to fall back in. And money is involved when I have so little-”take the high road, ” is what I Need to do. But I feel so wronged-that I’m struggling with how to respond. Thanks for the post.
