I’m Sara Avant Stover, and I want to share with you one of the most common questions I’ve received since writing my best-selling book, The Way of the Happy Woman. In that book, I describe how we, as women, historically lived in harmony with nature’s cycles, which still live within us in our personal monthly cycles. I suggested that women take a new look at their menstruation. Women responded with this question:

“Sara, what should I do on the first day of my cycle IF…”

… I work at an intense job?
… I’m traveling?
… I need to be on my feet all day?
… I’m a busy mom?
… I have the opportunity to actually take the day off?
… I’m not bleeding anymore but want to stay touch with my inner rhythms?

These are great questions.  After all, it’s wonderful to take the time and spaciousness to slow down when life allows.  But life isn’t always so accommodating!

When I read that 4 out of 5 women say menstruation is something “I just have to put up with”, I knew it was time to address this in a bigger way. 

We’ll be spending 90 minutes answering this question, one so seldom discussed.  I honestly can’t think of a better way to honor this special day — International Women’s Day. Our cycles are central to our womanhood, because in many ways we BECOME women the day we start bleeding.

What you do on the first day of your cycle radically affects your health and happiness for the next 30 (or so) days. It impacts your relationships, creativity, energy, spiritual connectedness, and self-confidence, just to name a few things.

As women, trying to ignore or “get through” our cycle, is a prescription for real problems down the road.  A healthy cycle is the key component to our overall health and happiness.

Ancient healing traditions like Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda know this, but in our modern lives, we women have it backwards. We banish our cycles to the outskirts of our lives—and are paying the price through PMS, painful cycles, excessive moodiness, and, over the long run, greater risk of disease and early death.

So, my dears, on this International Women’s Day, let’s come together. Let’s shine light on this important topic to help women to be better women in the world.

My aim is to empower you to view the first day of your cycle as the source of your deepest creativity, broadest insight, most powerful recharge, and radical empowerment.
